Good thoughts, Kevin. We would need to know how many levels of emergence are required to create consciousness since emergence takes place on many levels. Perhaps certain psychedelic drugs such as DMT are allowing yet another level of emergence on top of regular consciousness. Also, we need a way to distinguish appearances from reality since something can appear to be conscious (Turing) yet only be mechanical and sphexish. Some believe consciousness is basically a recursive function that calls itself from within itself.
