I prefer to take a holistic approach to history (see link below) to avoid the pissing contests so everyone gets to enjoy a common legacy. While American labs, universities and businesses do crank out a tremendous amount of intellectual property, the foundations were indeed inherited from Europe (as well as many people). Likewise, Europeans inherited much from the East and Africa. It's a continuous exchange of ideas. Guitars in Spain, from Morocco, become electric guitars and Rock 'n Roll in America, become the Beatles and Led Zeppelin in the UK and so forth. BTW, in 1927, at the age of 21, farmer Philo Farnsworth completed the prototype of the first working fully electronic TV system, based on his “image dissector.” These things are always debated for ego purposes.

It's important to remember that the US is a somewhat global culture attracting the best and brightest from around the world for quite a long time. That's why Einstein moved here as well as Musk.
