I'm not so sure you have the latest information on what Germany is doing. If anything, it seems that the EU is acting more together than ever so Germany is more like a state in the USA within that construct. Also, German science and engineering is second to none so whatever has a technical solution such as fusion or more renewables will be a high priority throughout the EU/US/Japan/Korea alliance. Germany has good friends but yes, made some bad decisions or bets on a rational Russia. That's over.
