One hidden reality is much of America's oil is extracted by independent drillers, small companies on the front lines. These companies are struggling to be profitable and really only are when oil is above $100 per barrel for an extended period. Thus the fantasy of "drill baby drill" ignores the hard facts for the actual drillers. This doesn't include the cost of assaying and starting up a whole new drill rig which is a huge risky investment these days.
