The Delusion of Politics
delusional: [adj] Believing something to be true that is clearly not. Someone who is not thinking clearly. Used to describe someone attached to an idea which is obviously false.
I have written in the past about the Delusion of Religion and the Delusion of Profit which are both related to this topic, if not caused by the exact same mental illness and lack of lucidity. It’s no wonder they say avoid talking about religion or politics in polite company. They both rely on a sort of innate irrationality of hardened belief systems which gets psychologically touchy very rapidly if someone brings up a contradiction to your closely held belief(s). However, unlike religion, which is metaphysical and other-worldly, politics is very much in this world and regarding practical, tangible matters that directly or indirectly affect our lives.
politics: [noun] The art or science of government. The art or science concerned with guiding or influencing governmental policy. The art or science concerned with winning and holding control over a government.
Art or science? Which is it? Art connotes a sort of subjective skill while science is based on objective facts and evidence. Probably a little bit of both—in theory. However, in reality it seems far more subjective, especially these days when so many people seem harshly divided by political lines. But I like these two…
