The Planetary Stewardship Oath

We have all sorts of Oaths we use to keep folks honest and to have a clear and ethical mission for important activities. We require politicians, public servants and soldiers to swear an oath to our Constitution. Since these are merely words of affirmation we know that the keeping of such oaths falls to the integrity of the individual and we’ve seen plenty of failures to uphold these oaths which are often unenforceable. We require doctors to swear to the Hippocratic Oath for medical integrity and above all to do no harm.

But we really don’t have an oath we can swear to protect the most important thing in the World, the World itself! I’ve recently written an article titled Never Love Your Country More Than Your Planet and so now I’m writing a small companion bit to propose an Oath for the Planet—The Planetary Stewardship Oath. I think something like this should be sworn by every official in a position to affect the environment so that they know we care and future generations care and the voiceless, lawyerless Earth cares too. Possibly even any human on Earth should swear this oath for the good of all.

Please, dear readers, suggest changes or additions you can think of and maybe together we can create a final version. This is my initial attempt.
